Riverside African American Historical Society, Inc. (RAAHS) Announces 28th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Walk-A-Thon

Riverside, CA – December 1, 2022 – The Riverside African American Historical Society, Inc. will be hosting the 28th Annual Martin Luther King Walk-A-Thon. The walk provides an opportunity for the residents of the Inland Southern California Communities to gather in celebration of the life and legacy of this great American Nobel Peace Prize recipient and Civil Rights Leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The walk will be held Monday, January 16, 2023, the federal holiday that marks Dr. King’s birthday. The theme this year is “A Legacy of Strength, A Future of Action.”

The walk will begin at Bordwell Park’s Stratton Community Center at 2008 Martin Luther King Blvd. and meander through the city ending at Riverside Main Library Breezeway across from the new Civil Rights Institute at 3900 Mission Inn Avenue. Volunteers will be stationed along the route for assistance as needed.

Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. at Stratton Center at 2008 Martin Luther King Blvd. The walk will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. at the entrance of the center. All registered participants will receive a commemorative T-Shirt. A limited edition commemorative coin is available on a first come first serve basis in addition to a Ontario Clippers Game Family Pack.  Free shuttle service back to Stratton Center will be available every half hour beginning at 11:00 a.m.

A registration fee of $35.00 is required of all participants. Children under 12 years old will be free with a signed waiver. All proceeds from the walk will be used to support the Civil Rights Institute, Clarke Scholarships, Grier College Scholarships, and the maintenance and upkeep of the Martin Luther King, Jr. statue.

Festivities following the walk will include a special program and presentation of awards by honorary chair, Councilmember Erin Edwards, Dr. Judy White, Andy Melendrez, Samara Alavarado and Chani Beeman.
